SENDING A STRONG ANTI-DRUG MESSAGE!
Houston city council member Jarvis Johson is kicking off a campaign that will bring attention to drug use around the city. He’s also hoping to get a commitment from young people in district B that they won’t do drugs. He held a press conference Friday on the steps of city hall with dozens of students from several high schools in his district. The students say drugs have become a major problem in their schools and community. Johnson brought together several community leaders including Derrick Muhammad to emphasize their commitment to making a difference in the young people’s lives. If you need more information on this effort contact the councilman’s office on how you can get involved!
BYRON DOESN’T NEED A REPORTER SLOWING HIM DOWN!
Byron Nichols is The Insite photographer of the week. Byron is a long time employee of KPRC TV 2. He is one of those hard working photo-journalists an assignments editor can send out to a story without a reporter because he will ask any and all questions needed to tell the story and get to the truth. He’s frequently seen out in the field with Mary Benton, Carl Willis, Kym Alvarado Booth and a long list of KPRC reporters. Byron is also married to Houston television personality Darian Ward. And Byron has a book out on the market so make sure you check out his website. I also here he’s pretty good when it comes to trail rides and horseback riding. Thanks Byron for stopping by The Insite…By the way, he is the first photojournalist picked by a consensus of The Insite committee which consists of The Insite and Torrey ‘T-Dub’ Walker.
THE GALA WITH A TRUE PURPOSE – SENDING YOUNG PEOPLE TO COLLEGE!
The Houston Association of Black Journalist Gala was held at the Hilton Post Oak Friday night. The Insite attended the event that benefits students who are hoping to become journalist. The event was very successful with the house being packed with members of the media as well as community leaders and others. The sad part about this is the Insite left the Insite-Cam at home. Can you believe that. But Insite contributing photographer/blogger – Accounting Guru Bob Martin came to the rescue and took these photos for me. Also Jule ‘The Socialite’ Grayum loaned The Insite a camera but I don’t have a cord to down load the photos so expect those pics late Saturday or Sunday. In the meantime, here are some familiar faces including Mary Benton, Darian Ward, The Insite, Angela Willaims, Len Cannon, Jerome Gray, Melanie Lawson, Dartangnan Bebel, Patrick Trahan, Mayor Bill White, Yolanda Adams, Wendell Edwards, Carl ‘The New Hammer’ Davis, Serbino Walker, Ronald Green and the list just goes on!

HELPING THOSE WHO DON’T HAVE BUT IT’S NOT A FREE RIDE!
The Insite has learned the homeless of Houston will get a helping hand at least when they go to Municipal court. The city has embarked upon a program they call Homeless court. It’s designed to help transients who are trying to get their lives together. The court will forgive fines and try and keep the homeless out of jail if they perform community service while also trying to turn their lives around. The court meets once a month with Judge Steven Kirkland. He says defendants must also appear with a case worker from the social or assistance program they’re taking part in like US Vets or Star of Hope. But Kirkland, who says the court was modeled after the system in San Diego, is definitely not a free pass. The judge says the defendants will get violations on their driving record like everyone else but the city realizes many of them don’t have the money to pay fines. So they’re giving back by performing community service. Homeless court has been in session for the last three months…

EXCESSIVE FORCE ON TWO INMATES!
A dozen Harris County deputies find themselves in hot water this week. The Insite has learned 3 Sergeants, 1 deputy and 2 detention officers have been fired or disciplined for using excessive force on two inmates. Lt. John Martin with The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says the problems began when several inmates in the Baker street jail appeared to be drunk back in April. A supervisor ordered a search of their cell and deputies found jail house moonshine. But the deputies reportedly went too far when they tried to restrain two inmates. Martin says one detainee was beaten so bad he ended up in the infirmary. This is not the end of the story because we’re told the Harris County District Attorney’s office is now looking at the case.

IT’S HARD OUT HERE FOR A COP!
I have several cop contacts out there and once in a while they share their experiences with me. They make it perfectly clear it’s not easy being a HPD officer. Here’s a day in the life of:
HPD OFFICER: Had a scary one last night.
I saw a car pulling out of Knuckleheads Sports Bar (2600 Winrock near Westheimer) and heard tires squealing. I figure it’s a drunk and go after him. A man runs from the parking lot and tells me he had just been carjacked and it was the car I was going after.
The suspect couldn’t figure out how to release the emergency brake of the 2007 Impala he had just stolen. So he is running from me at 10 mph leaving skid marks behind. He stops at 6300 Ella Lee and fumbles for something in the car before bailing out. As he exits the car, he drops his 9mm, which we later find to be loaded and have the hammer locked back.
He ran off and I chased him on foot until he entered a dark area and we set up a perimeter. We never found him but recovered the car in good shape for the complainant.
Scary to think this guy was probably going to take a shot at me.
On another note. Officers who were up close to the command staff during the funeral were stated many of the command staff were not wearing their vests, as required. Many officers fainted due to the heat/vests.
PRISCILLA KWAN DROPS BY THE INSITE!
The Insite would like to welcome talented reporter Priscilla Kwan to the FOX 26 newsroom. She is now a member of the new MYFOXHOUSTON.COM website staff. And she is now stop in her effort to keep the new website updated. I hear the computer keyboard going at 100 mph around the clock. She’s making me and my frequent 20 minute coke breaks look really bad. You may remember Priscilla from KPRC TV 2 where she worked as a reporter in 2005. Welcome to FOX and thanks for dropping by the Insite Priscilla!
