Both of them are on the air at KTRK Ch. 13. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should watch 13. Just kidding. But congratulations on Gaston being named best anchor and Cynthia as best reporter. HER BIG DAY HAS ARRIVED!

TIME TO ANSWER THE TOUGH QUESTIONS BEFORE THE JURY!

Former Houston Mayor Pro Tem Carol Alvarado went before the Harris County grand jury this morning to answer questions about her role in the Bonus-Gate case. Sources tell the Insite Alvarado wanted to postpone today’s appearance but the grand jury balked at the idea saying she was on their schedule. As you may remember four former city employees admitted to taking more than $40,000 in city bonuses. They claim the funds were approved by Alvarado. The city council member was accompanied by her high profile attorney Rusty Hardin and spokesperson Joe Householder this morning at the Harris County Court building…

DID RADIO TALK SHOW HOST CHRIS BAKER GO TOO FAR!

THE CIVIL RIGHTS GROUPS ARE ANGRY WITH HIM!

Members of LULAC and The NAACP are upset at radio talk show host Chris Baker. They claim the conservative host rants on the radio about the death of Officer Rodney Johnson sparked a hail of ugly calls to the Houston LULAC office. Baker has made it no secret about how he feels about illegal immigrants in Houston – so members of the civil rights groups say he encouraged his listeners to call the LULAC office and express how they feel about Johnson’s death at the hands of an illegal immigrant. A receptionist for LULAC said she was frightened because one of the listeners called and threatened to kick her ass. Clear Channel communications – the owner of KTRH – stood behind their host and emphasize Baker is free to express his opinion. So what do you think….Did he go too far endangering individuals with his message or is it much ado about nothing?

HAVE YOU PLAYED THE NAME GAME IN SEPTEMBER!

IS YOUR NAME MARIAH CAREY OR ISAAC HAYES – I CAN’T REMEMBER MR. INSITE!

It’s actually funny because the month of September has been brutal on my name. When people see The Insite out and about most of them get my name right. But every now and then it goes really wrong. I usually don’t correct them because people are kind of embarassed after they approach you with so much confidence but a few times I had to say something. The names I have been called were way off. Let’s start with Isaiah Washington (actor), Isiah Thomas (athlete), Isiah Jones (Who?), Isiah Williams (Who again?) and here’s where it goes just really bad. I was at an event when a lady came up to me and said “it is a pleasure to meet you Mr. Hayes.” She then followed up and said “…your name is Isaac Hayes isn’t it.” (Shut your mouth) I was also called David Tillman (Ch. 13), Jerome Gray (Ch. 11) and the crown jewel was: “Aren’t you Mariah Carey?” It’s got to stop somewhere!

THE BATTLE TO COVER ENRON AT 515 RUSK!

VERY BUSY AT ANDREW FASTOW’S SENTENCING!

The media was out in full force Tuesday at the federal court house in downtown Houston. Enron former CFO Andrew Fastow was in court for sentencing. Lots of familiar faces out in front of the federal building. Here are some of the pictures I snapped as Fastow arrived and after he was sent off in the federal paddy wagon. At the scene were Kym Alvarado Booth, Jason Whitely, Joe Lanford, Xavier Kirts, The Insite, Cynthia Cisneros, Laurel Calkins and a long list of others…

ANDREW FASTOW HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!

SIX YEARS IN THE BIG HOUSE!

The former Chief Financial Officer of Enron was sentenced to 6 years in federal prison for his role in the 2001 demise of the former energy giant. Fastow at some points sobbed in court asking for the forgiveness of his family and that of thousands of former Enron investors who lost billions of dollars when the company imploded. Fastow’s defense attorney asked that he be placed in a 500 hour drug treatment program. Lawyers say he apparently became hooked after experiencing Enron related anxiety. Fastow’s counsel also said he has been the victim of anti-Semitic hatred as a result of enron. He must also serve 2 years of probation under the sentence handed down by federal judge Kenneth Hoyt.

GIBBS SAYS SHE KNOWS SHE FACES AN UPHILL BATTLE!

OUT ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL!

Houston city council member Shelley Sekula Gibbs is spending an unbelievable number of hours out on the campaign trail. She’s seeking the seat left vacant by embattled politician Tom DeLay. The Insite caught up with Gibbs at a country club in Clear Lake. She briefly introduced herself to the members of the Space Center Rotary Club. It’s one of a half dozen lunches and appearances she made that day. Gibbs says she realizes what a tough time she faces as a write in candidate. She’s not actually on the ballot as a result of DeLays resignation from the post. She’s taking on democrat Nick Lampson for the congressional seat. Gibbs also dropped off what was described as a generous donation according to Rotary club member Scott Rainey. His words to The Insite, “You should let people know how generous she is.” Rainey says the money will go towards the rotary club’s annual fundraiser, The Shrimporee. Here are some the pictures I snapped at the country club appearance!

LIGHT THEM WHILE YOU GOT’EM BECAUSE THEY COULD BE BANNED!

HOUSTON CONSIDERS SMOKING BAN!

It was almost standing room only at a Houston’s city council Public Health committee meeting Monday afternoon. The topic of discussion is should smoking be banned from bars. The ban received an overview of evidence collected state-wide and nationally on the cost of going smoke-free. Several speakers addressed the committee including one witness who said that bar sales in Austin had dropped 17 percent after a smoking ban was implemented. That witness went on to say sales outside the city where there was no such ordinance had risen 20 percent. What do you think? Should there be a smoking ban in Houston bars?
