PRESS RELEASE FROM HISD:
Best known for her portrayal as the sassy Thelma on the 1970s sitcom “Good Times,” actress Bern Nadette Stanis will talk with HISD students Monday, October 30, about her personal experiences in the television industry.
The actress will meet at 9:30 a.m. with drama students at Holland Middle School, 1600 Gellhorn (77029) and at 1 p.m. with magnet students at Codwell Elementary School, 5225 Tavenor (77048).
“I’m always thrilled to speak with young people, especially those in the arts,” said Stanis regarding her upcoming presentations at the two HISD campuses.
Stanis recently has authored a book, “Situations 101,” in which she addresses self-esteem issues and insecurities that prevail among young women. While touring Texas, she also will visit military bases and bookstores in Austin and San Antonio.
This year, HISD is investing more than $1.75 million to expand campus fine arts programs. Schools are recruiting musicians, actors, dancers, and other artists to volunteer at campuses and share their skills with students.
Research clearly shows that participation in the arts boosts student attendance, behavior, and most importantly—academic performance. In learning how to act, paint, or play an instrument, children gain a different understanding of core curriculum subjects and their practical applications.
