AND ON DAY 26 HE GAVE US NED HIBBERD!
My good friend and accountant to the stars Bob Martin sent the Insite this article. It makes it clear there would be no Ned Hibberd as we know him if it weren’t for Houston Chronicle columnist Ken Hoffman – Enjoy!
I just found out that I’m responsible or the broadcasting career of a Houston newscasting legend.
OK, maybe not a legend … Channel 26’s Ned Hibberd.
I teach a course on the history of TV comedy at Rice University’s School of Continuing Education. Don’t worry, there’s no final exam, and I don’t take attendance. Basically, I talk about great situation comedies, then I put on videotapes and we all fall asleep.
Mostly, I teach this course so I can park for free when I play tennis on the Rice courts.
Years ago, Hibberd applied to be an intern at Channel 26. The problem was, he already had graduated from college, and Channel 26 offered internships only to people still in school.
“That’s when I took your sitcom class, so I’d qualify as a ‘currently enrolled student.’ I got the internship. If I didn’t take your course, I’d probably be a lifer at the Bookstop or Star Pizza.
“I’m curious: Has your class evolved at all in the intervening years? I’m guessing no,” Hibberd said. Has the class evolved? Uh, Ned, they’re not exactly making new episodes of I Love Lucy.
