INSITE READER AND FORMER INSITE HIGH SCHOOL CLASSMATE GETS IN BIG TROUBLE!

SAY IT AIN’T SO HERMAN, SAY IT AIN’T SO!

This is really sad. One of my former high school classmates and friend who’s wedding I was in is facing big trouble in my hometown. In fact, Herman Lovelady, a local teacher, was a big Insite reader until these horrible allegations broke on Friday in Baton Rouge, La. I was also suppose to go and speak to one of his classes in the near future. Here is the report from The Baton Rouge Advocate:

A man accused of repeatedly beating his 12-year-old daughter with an extension cord before forcing her to sit in an alcohol bath escaped from custody en route to Parish Prison Friday night, authorities said.

Herman Lovelady Jr. was being shuttled to the prison about 10:30 p.m. by an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office detective when he jumped out of the car at the Interstate 110 ramp at North Boulevard, said spokesman Fred Raiford.

Lovelady, a Millerville Academy teacher, eluded a manhunt and police chase dogs until he was captured about 10:30 a.m. Saturday in a residence at 313 Kimmeridge Drive, Raiford said.

“At first we were unable to find him and then we got a tip and arrested him without incident,” Raiford said. “He was not being transported in a uniform patrol vehicle and the doors were not locked.”

Raiford said he did not know if Lovelady was handcuffed at the time of his escape.

Lovelady and his current wife, Alicia Lovelady, a teacher at Brusly Elementary School, were arrested and booked into the Parish Prison on counts of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, a Sheriff’s Office news release said.

Because he jumped out of the car, Herman Lovelady Jr. was also booked on a count of simple escape, deputies said.

Deputies arrested the couple Friday after learning their daughter had marks and scars from fresh and old wounds, appearing to have been made by a loop of wire along the girl’s back, across her buttocks and down to her thighs, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Investigators who interviewed the child said she told them her father had beaten her with a loop of extension cord after she was suspended from school, the release said.

The child said her father forced her to strip nude except for her socks and lay on the floor before he began beating her, the release said.

After the beating, which caused numerous open wounds, she was forced to sit in a bathtub of alcohol. The child said the cycle repeated twice more in one evening.

During the investigation, deputies learned that Alicia Lovelady sat and watched the beating, the release said. Under Louisiana law, Alicia Lovelady was criminally negligent not to intervene.

The couple confessed to the beatings, according to the release, and the girl is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
