I was covering a court case Tuesday when a woman’s pager went off in Judge Michael McSpadden’s courtroom. The judge told the woman to get out and the bailiff – a Harris County deputy followed. The woman was in court for the high profile case where a Spring high school student was brutally beaten and sexually assaulted by two teenagers. The woman, Christina Sons (stripe shirt), is the mother of 16 year old Gus Sons (the teen testifying on stand). He was with Keith Turner and David Tuck when they allegedly attacked another 16 year old for kissing or attempting to kiss Son’s younger sister. But back to the pager. It went off in the courtroom and so Christina Sons was asked to leave. Just outside the courtroom the Harris County deputy told Sons the judge is tired of people bringing cell phones and pagers into the courtroom and leaving them on. Deputy J.R. Ray told Sons and a group of reporters he had already confiscated 17 cell phones including 3 blackberries. And Ray said they don’t return the devices to the owners. Sons seemed shocked after the deputy told her she wouldn’t get her pager back. He also told her she was in custody and took her purse so she wouldn’t leave the courthouse. But as she was walking out the courtroom and out of ear shot the deputy called her “stupid white trash”. I was quite offended by that because it could’ve easily been an African American. What would he have said in that case. I just felt uncomfortable with the comment while some of the photogs and reporters standing around shrugged it off. I think it was inappropriate even though the woman’s pager went off in court. Just The Insite venting!
