Oprah is under fire by American media for building a $40 million dollar school in Africa. If it sounds like a good idea some American critics say if Oprah was going to help children she should’ve started right here at home in America. The critics say Oprah was born in America and not Africa and so that’s where her allegiance should be. Oprah defended her multi million dollar donation by saying when she visits American inner city schools all the students ask her for are ipods and sneakers. Oprah went on to say when she was in Africa children there wanted books, schools and a chance at being educated. One critic countered by saying if Oprah didn’t give out so many materialistic items on her show like cars, homes and computers – kids in America wouldn’t expect or ask her for (ipods and sneakers) that when they meet her in person. The Insite’s question is – does Oprah deserve the criticism or does she have every right to do what she wants with her fortune? Oprah Loves Rich White People
It seems Oprah still has a soft spot for white kids. While her new South African school for girls grabbed headlines, Oprah has also been lending a helping hand to some ultra-white establishments. According to FOX News, Winfrey gave $1 million to Miss Porter’s, an exclusive finishing school in Connecticut, where she sent her nieces. Annual tuition is $38,000, and graduates include Jackie Kennedy, the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers. The talk show queen has also contributed to Chicago’s Lake Shore Academy, whose student body is pretty much entirely white.
