As reporters we get dozens of calls a day – from people hoping to get their story on the air. Sometimes you get very good stories and sometimes you get very bad stories. This one was a sad story. I received a call last week that was so sad it was heartbreaking. It was from a single mother of 3 who said she paid extra taxes all year long so that she could receive a big refund to buy a refrigerator for her house. That woman says she was able to get $3600 back from the IRS. Apparently, she was out and about earlier that day on the north freeway at the Sprint store. She was there to pay a bill and decided to drive across the parking lot to Fry’s to look at refrigerators. And that’s when her world came crashing down around her. She realized somewhere between the Sprint store and Fry’s she lost the bundle of cash she was hoping to buy a refrigerator for her home. She called me frantically in hopes that I could do a story. She wanted me to deliver a message asking anyone who may have found the money to please return it to her. The pain in her voice was just numbing. My heart just dropped because there was no way I was going to be able to get someone who found $3600 to turn it in. I know there are still a lot of honest people out there but it’s highly unlikely someone would turn it back over. I had to tell the desperate mother there wasn’t anything that I could do because her money is likely gone. That was a tough call to take knowing I could do absolutely nothing to help her. Just a slice of life from the Insite!
