After failing to win a Super Bowl in their first four seasons together, Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and quarterback Peyton Manning finally were able to celebrate as champions.
The exhilaration Dungy and Manning experienced after Sunday’s 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears at Dolphin Stadium was almost overwhelming for each of them. But for different reasons.
Manning, who suffered one playoff failure after another and was forced to watch New England quarterback Tom Brady win three Super Bowls in five years, was under excruciating pressure to prove he could win the big one.
Dungy, who has been living with the pain of his oldest son’s suicide since December 2005, earned that long-overdue Super Bowl ring by beating Chicago coach Lovie Smith, one of his closest friends.
