BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT MS. HOLLIDAY ON HOUSTON TELEVISION!
First, for all of you who didn’t know Jennifer Holliday, the original Effie in DreamGirls, is from Texas – specifically Riverside, Tx. Well anyway, a local news show was doing a segment on former Houston resident Lakisha Jones appearance on American Idol. They talked about how she performed the song “And I’m Telling You” as done by Jennifer Hudson. The interviewers failed to mention the original singer of the song Jennifer Holliday. So that station’s phone started ringing from relatives of Jennifer Holliday. They complained that Ms. Holliday wasn’t mention and she’s the one who made the song a hit. No word on how the station fixed the problem since the interview segment was already over. So be careful what you say about Jennifer Holliday in Houston because she has plenty of relatives out there listening!

#1 SELLING AUTHOR, SPEAKER AND NEW BABY ON THE WAY!
The Insite had chance to speak with former FOX 26 reporter Reshonda Tate Sunday about her latest happenings. The best selling author says she’s just taken #1 position on Ebony Magazine for her book ‘Blessings in Disguise’. She bumped out Dallas based nationally renown preacher T-D Jakes for the #1 position. Tate is also #1 pick for women in the month of March. The author is also the spirit award winner for Texas African American Chamber of Commerce this year. And the news is not done quite yet – Tate is scheduled to be the Empowerment speaker at the Metamorphosis Conference. Finally, congratulations are in order – Reshonda is expecting a new baby boy in the month of May. It will be her first young boy in the family – she already has two little girls!
IT’S TIME FOR THE FUN RUN FOR A GOOD CAUSE!
The Insite received this letter from City Council candidate Andy Neill reminding Insite readers about a fun run:
Dear Insite Readers-
Please come support the Houston Humane Society on Sunday, March 18th at the 26th annual K-9 Fun Run. This is their largest fundraiser of the year, and it’s where they raise most of the money they use to rescue, heal and re-home over 50,000 pets each year. Last year they had almost 1,000 runners, and more than two thousand people attended to celebrate the day.
The race is just one measly mile long, so anyone can do it. You can enter in either the competitive run category, the jog category, or the walk category. The three races happen at different times, so no one has to worry about getting run over. The event this year is at the Sam Houston Park on the edge of downtown, and races kick off at noon (though the free food starts long before that).
There will be music, Frisbee dog demonstrations, and again free food (including Kolaches, Starbucks, Canyon Cafe, Coldstone Creamery, etc.). After the race there is a parade of “graduates” from the HHS who’ve been living in their loving homes for years now, and a doggie costume contest with celebrity judges (might Isiah be one of them ??). You can register online at http://www.houstonhumane.org/events.aspx. They’d love your support, and I hope to see you out there on race day!

KEVIN A. WILLIAMS: THE #1 SELLING URBAN ARTIST IN THE COUNTRY!
The Insite had a chance to meet nationally renown artist Kevin A. Williams last week. He is an artist whose work has been featured on television, magazines and in other mediums. Williams, who made a brief visit to Houston from Atlanta, is also known as talk show host Oprah Winfrey’s favorite artist. His work sits in her home and Harpo Studios. Williams is also a favorite of FOX tv star Bernie Mac. The two even have an art collection together. Kevin is a very humble person. If you meet him he will never tell you about his greatness in the art world. After being forced by a friend he got on the internet and started showing his collection to an attendant group. Hey Kevin – thanks for dropping by The Insite!
Kevin A. Williams is an artist on a mission, but his is no solo trip: He wants to take you on the journey, too. His destination is a place where more African-Americans will appreciate, own and even create fine art that honors their rich heritage and hope filled destiny. So far, tens of thousands of people have willingly followed Williams to that vista – including talk-show host Oprah Winfrey, and actor comedian Bernie Mac. From celebrity homes to small businesses, corporate offices and women’s spas, Williams’ original and lithograph artwork hangs from coast to coast.
In fact, his collection of 50 lithograph prints – created under the “WAK Artistry” signature – is the most widely circulated urban fine arts series in the nation. His art has been featured on television’s “Law & Order” (NBC) and “Soul Food” (Showtime).
