I thought this was an interesting article by Houston Chronicle Political Columnist Kristen Mack. She addresses what is seen as Governor Rick Perry’s latest political misstep in the TSU conservatorship issue. Here’s a segment of the article that seems to get at the heart of the issue!
(Governor) Perry’s intentions are sound, but his timing is off. He should have taken decisive action last June when Slade was fired and accused of using school funds for personal purchases.
Instead he announced his plans April 13 — on a Friday afternoon, traditionally a release time designed to minimize attention and immediate fallout. He didn’t publicly engage lawmakers or stakeholders.
In response to uproar among TSU supporters — most recently a student rally on the campus Thursday — Perry now says he’ll consider a compromise if it would achieve the same goals as a conservatorship.
This is the third time this session that Perry has been forced to compromise, after the fact.
He met resistance to his executive order requiring schoolgirls to be vaccinated against a virus linked to cervical cancer. He moved too slowly in appointing a conservator to oversee the Texas Youth Commission amid reports of violence and abuse at its detention facilities. And now he is receiving pushback for wanting to appoint someone to take over TSU.
