The Insite received a disturbing call from a Houston attorney Monday who claims to know several people in the African American community who have actually paid alleged community activists to get them media attention. It was very disturbing! The attorney who wanted to remain anonymous says there has been a racket going on in Houston for years with so called activist organizations charging people thousands of dollars to get the news media to show for a press conference. As a member of the media I wanted to make it perfectly clear to all those who have stories to tell or incidents they need press coverage on – it doesn’t cost you a dime and you shouldn’t have to pay. The media also doesn’t require a certain person or organization to call us in order to show up for press conference. The most recent occurrence the Insite has heard about allegedly involves a group that has called a press conference for this week. I’m told by the Houston attorney the woman who needed help paid this group $3500 to get members of the media to show up. This woman, who’s a native of Ethiopia, also gave the group a cashier’s check for $3500. The activist group gave the woman a contract for the services: ‘to call a press conference.’ The attorney says this is the first time one of the many activist groups has slipped up and put their services in writing. Meanwhile, I’m told this is the second time this group has called a press conference for the woman because the first time no members of the media showed. That attorney says “they should stop pimping the black community.” That attorney also claims once the press conference is over the victims usually don’t hear from the alleged activists again. If this is going on those who are taking advantage of the unsuspecting public should be criminally charged and shown for the parasites they are. People: You don’t have to pay for news coverage. Just pick up the phone yourself and call KRIV, KHOU, KTRK, KPRC, KTRH, The Houston Chronicle, Houston Press, Houston Defender or CW39 yourself. We all will take your call and if you have a legitimate issue – you will get news coverage without costing you a penny. So just say not to those alleged community activists who want to charge you for a press conference!
