IS IT CONTRADICTORY OR JUST A BAD MESSAGE?

SIMMONS AND MABREY DON’T AGREE!

I watched an excellent report on Nightline Tuesday. It was about Russell Simmon’s HIP HOP ACTION NETWORK. The reporter was Vicki Mabrey. The story focused on how Simmon’s network travels the country (made a stop in Houston earlier this year) educating the young hip hop community about their finances. In the ABC News report the rappers in the network told young people not to spend their hard earned money on the bling or dubs. Simmon’s says it’s the message he wants to send to the youth – don’t waste your money trying to live like a rap star in music videos. But later in the report Simmons takes Mabrey into a room that displays his new clothing line and some of the jewelry he sells. Mabrey immediately noticed what she perceived as a contradiction. She asked the record mogul didn’t he just warn a young crowd not to waste their money on expensive items – yet he’s marketing diamond bracelets and $400 pairs of jeans to them. Simmons took offense and was snappy with Mabry saying shouldn’t he be able to sell his products to the public. My question – is Russell Simmons contradicting himself? If he wants to preach to young people don’t waste your money should he market the diamond bracelets or $400 pairs of jeans to them? The Insite would love to hear from you on this issue!
