7,000 TO SEE HIP HOP CONCERT TODAY FOR TAKING HIV TEST!
EXPECT RELIANT ARENA TO BE PACKED!
7000 youth and young adults between the ages of 15-30 who all were tested for HIV here in Houston, received free tickets for today’s historic HIP HOP 4 HIV concert at Reliant Arena featuring international hip hop artists Lil’ Wayne, Baby, UGK, David Banner and Houston’s own former Destiny’s Child Kelly Rowland.
In what many are calling the largest single HIV testing event in U.S. history, the “Know Your Status” testing project is the brainchild of freshman Texas State Representative (District 146) Borris L. Miles, whose mostly southeast Houston district leads the state in new HIV infections, mostly among young African-American women.
Calling the staggering infection statistics, “a modern day urban epidemic”, Miles said, “we felt that we had to do something drastic, creative and appealing to these young people whose very lives lie in the balance everyday with the growing scourge of Houston’s HIV epidemic. I just could not sit by and not do something to help stop this killer taking over our community.”
Working in conjunction with popular radio station 97.9 “The Box” KBXX and the TexStars Foundation, two of the event’s primary sponsors along with many Houston area healthcare agencies, Miles’ HIP HOP 4 HIV “Know Your Status” Concert has already garnered national attention for the unprecedented numbers of young people who were tested in such a short period of time.
