DO YOU THINK IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO SHIP INMATES OUT?
In case you missed FOX 26 news Friday night you missed news that Harris County Jail officials are considering a radical way of dealing with jail overcrowding. Lt. John Martin tells The Insite several high ranking jail officials are headed on a tour next week. They will visit several jails to determine if Harris County could ship some of its inmates there. Currently, Martin says there are 10,000 inmates in the jail with 700 of them sleeping on bunks on the floor. He says this latest effort is another way of dealing with the growing jail population. You’ll remember it was just last April when the jail passed a state inspection but Martin says they’re quickly approaching a cap of inmates sleeping on bunks. The limit was set at 1100 by the state and now the actual number of floored inmates is at 700. Martin says they’re not just considering out of the county for jail space but out of state. However, one local attorney says that would be difficult on lawyers who have to counsel their clients before trials but sheriff’s officials say only those whose cases have been adjudicated will be moved. Also families say if their family member who’s in jail is shipped out of state it’d be very difficult to visit them. Lt. Martin says that’s not the jails concern. He says their focus is relieving the overcrowding at the county jail…Keep tuned to FOX 26 and The Insite for more details. The question today is do you think inmates should be shipped to other facilities to relieve overcrowding and why?
