Houston city council member Ada Edwards is about to realize a dream. She will soon announce the results of her fundraising efforts to build a Dr. Martin Luther King statue in Hermann Park. She says it’s been a long struggle but the funding of the tribute to the civil rights icon is almost there. Edwards’ face beamed with joy and excitement as she explained to the Insite just how many people came forward and donated. Edwards wanted to make it clear the money didn’t just come from big corporations or Houston celebrities like Beyonce‘ who donated $10,000 – but everyday folk. Edwards says if you see the list of donors it would show the financially diverse support she has received to build the statue. She says there were people who couldn’t afford to give but they stepped up to the plate giving $2 donations to fulfill a dream in Hermann Park. Edwards says she hopes to make the announcement with a ribbon cutting ceremony in December before she leaves office.
