Deborah Tang, creator of Black Entertainment Television’s news division, died Christmas day of cancer at her Washington home. She was 60. Tang hired news anchor Ed Gordon and talk-show host Tavis Smiley. Gordon tells the Web site, “Journal-isms,” that Tang was one of what he called “the kingmakers in this business.” He adds, “She saw the talent in us and put us in the positions we’re in.” Tang retired from BET in 2000 after 14 years there, many of them as a vice president of news, entertainment and news programming.
(Note: The Insite was hired under Tang’s administration as a Louisiana, then Arkansas, and Tennessee correspondent for BET News – I stopped working as a reporter for the news division in 2000 as well!)
