I was out hoping to interview some people at a southeast Houston apartment complex Monday afternoon. It was a simple story and to wrap up my day all I needed to get were some parents to talk about the death of a child. That didn’t happen. I went through at least a dozen people who all said they could not speak English. I was just surprised at the number of Houston residents who were content with not speaking English. But I realized there was a chance some of them may have been telling a fib. If I didn’t want to talk to the news media I would say I don’t speak the language. So that was my wake up call to learn Spanish. I was pretty good with Spanish while in high school. But after working in so many television markets where I didn’t need it, I lost the ability to conversate. How many of you out there took the initiative to learn to speak a second language and was it difficult?
