Assault charges against former Houston Texans receiver and kickoff returner Jerome Mathis were dropped Thursday.
Mathis, 24, was charged last month with assaulting his pregnant common-law wife at their Manvel-area home.
The woman, Erica Smith, 26, asked officials to drop the charges, Brazoria County District Attorney Jeri Yenne said.
Smith has since relocated to another state, Yenne said.
Mathis has also paid fines on citations issued by sheriff’s deputies in December following an incident when a pit bulldog mother and two puppies escaped from his yard and frightened residents of a nearby apartment complex.
Mathis paid a $100 fine for failure to contain the animals and a $500 for having unvaccinated animals, said his attorney, David Wilson.
Wilson said Mathis has had his fence repaired and is finding other homes for the dogs.
Mathis, a three-season Texan, spent the last season on the injured list. The Texans have not renewed his contract, meaning he is an unrestricted free agent who can sign with another team.
