TEACHERS IN THE ALIEF SCHOOL DISTRICT SAY THEY NEED A BREAK TO PLAN THEIR LESSONS!

SHOULD THE DISTRICT RESPECT THEIR TIME TO PREPARE?

Tomorrow, members of the Alief American Federation of Teachers and School Employees (AAFTSE) local 6346 plan to address the Alief school board on issues surrounding violations of Texas Education Code (TEC) 21.404 regarding Teachers’ classroom preparation and planning time. Alief ISD has been petitioned numerous times in the past by employees and employee groups to take measures necessary to ensure compliance with TEC 21.404, however the district continues to engage in violating teachers’ protected right to a 45 minute uninterrupted individual planning time to plan for their classroom activities each day. As educators in Alief ISD, Federation members will offer their insight and testimonies on the repercussions of these violations in an effort to help the district come into compliance with the law and restore educators’ rights under the law.

“It is the position of our union to wholeheartedly support our district’s efforts to effectively provide a quality learning environment for the students of Alief. Teachers’ individual and uninterrupted planning times are essential for effective classrooms and student learning”, says Veronica Thibideaux, President of AAFTSE local 6346. “In Linda Chaffin Vs. Los Fresnos ISD and in Strater Vs. Houston ISD, and yet again Gonzalez v. South San Antonio ISD, Commissioners decisions upheld the law on planning and prep time in favor of the teachers. It is time for Alief ISD to recognize the benefits of individual classroom planning and to comply with the law as it is intended”.

The statute was enacted for the purpose of giving teachers time to engage in parent-teacher conferences, reviewing students’ homework, and planning and preparation as the teacher, not the administration, deems best. The statute clearly relieves the teacher of any duty during this period of time and prohibits the district and its administration from requiring the teacher to engage in any other activity.. A teacher’s 45-minute planning and preparation period is, therefore, for the use of the teacher as he or she sees fit, within the statutory boundaries, and free from any duty mandated by the school district.
