Houston reporter Mary Benton recently landed an interview with the very elusive Sheriff Tommy Thomas. But Mary says she’s walking away from the exclusive because the Sheriff wants all of the questions in advance. Benton, like most reporters, don’t operate like that. Here’s what she had to say in her blog. There’s more at KPRC.com:
You have probably heard me say in my live reports (many times) that the Sheriff turned down my request for a comment on the story of the day.
If I get the opportunity, I plan to ask him about the conditions inside the jail, morale of his department, and recent reports of deputy misconduct. He is also facing the toughest re-election battle of his political career, so I’d like to know how he feels about his chances for winning in November.
Here’s the catch: a department spokesman told me I have to submit written questions.
If you know anything about news reporters, we don’t really like to operate that way.
After all, I am not asking Sheriff Thomas to give me an outline of how he plans to answer my questions before we sit down for the interview.
