HARRIS COUNTY DEPUTIES FIRED FOR LYING IN THE DEATH INVESTIGATION OF INMATE CLARENCE FREEMAN!

HARTFIELD AND HARRIS BOTH FIRED!

This was the story the Insite first broke back in January. After seven months of an internal investigation officials at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office have fired two deputies for lying in connection with the death of inmate Clarence Freeman. Freeman died back in January after an altercation with detention officer Nathan Hartfield. Hartfield claimed Freeman called him a nigger back on New Years day. Freeman alleges he only wanted his dinner tray. As a result of the altercation Hartfield says he tried to restrain Freeman who appeared to be combative. Freeman was choked so hard by officer Hartfield that he defecated and urinated on himself. Meanwhile, Sgt. Joyce Harris was fired because she lied on her statement into the investigation. She reportedly claimed she was on the scene of the incident but was outside the jail talking on her cell phone. Hartfield was also fired for lying in the investigation. The internal probe into the cause of Freeman’s death is still active. Here’s what the department released Friday:

On July 10, 2008, Detention Officer Nathan Hartfield (dob 11/29/71 – date of hire 5/29/06) and Sergeant Joyce Harris (dob 9/23/63 – date of hire 10/07/91), both of whom were assigned to the Detention Bureau of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, were terminated from the Sheriff’s Office pursuant to the investigation into the in-custody death of Clarence Freeman. Specific details of the termination of these employees was provided previously by Major McWilliams.
