A Galena Park mother has taken officials to the area in her backyard where she buried her 16-year-old daughter’s newborn, but detectives have been unable to locate the body, officials said.
The teenager told officials at the Galena Park Police Department Thursday she already was five months pregnant when her mother started threatening her and forcing her to take unknown pills and or shots, officials said. After taking the pills, she started cramping and finally delivered the baby around June 10.
Detectives say the mother admitted to burying the baby in the family’s backyard in the 2100 block of 15th Street, but she hasn’t admitted to giving her daughter any pills.
Officials said they found a patch of disturbed earth behind the house and carefully began digging but found nothing. But through an attorney, the teen’s mother led police to the same exact spot they’d been searching.
A 5-month-old fetus is just a few inches long, and it’s been buried for about a month, officials said. An anthropology team from the medical examiner’s office has been called out to scope the area.
Meanwhile, the mother is in police custody, but she won’t be charged unless a body is found, officials said.
The 16-year-old’s aunt says the girl had been afraid to speak up about the incident, but mustered up the courage to notify her about the situation. Once the aunt found out and was shown where the fetus was buried, she took the teen to the police department to file a report.
Officials say the father of the baby is 18 years old.
