In what may be an unprecedented move, Harris County Sheriff’s deputy unions announce Friday they will endorse the incumbent Sheriff’s challenger in the November election.
Union leaders say the endorsement of Democrat Adrian Garcia comes after years of dissatisfaction with Republican Sheriff Tommy Thomas.
Sheriff Thomas has been under fire in recent months for a series of missteps. Thomas has been the Harris County Sheriff since 1995.
In a written statement issued to the media, Thomas said he has tried to work with all the unions, but he sometimes needed to make decisions that he feels are best for the department.
He also said he was not surprised that the unions endorsed Garcia because they endorsed other democratic candidates in the fall election.
