SUGAR LAND’S FIRE CHIEF HAS ABRUPTLY RESIGNED… AFTER AN ARGUMENT WITH THE CITY MANAGER. A CITY COUNCIL MEMBER TELLS US, THE TWO HAD A DISAGREEMENT OVER EMERGENCY OPERATIONS FOR HURRICANE IKE THAT WEEKEND AFTER THE STORM. DURING THE DISAGREEMENT, WE’RE TOLD FIRE CHIEF DANNIE SMITH TOLD CITY MANAGER ALLEN BOGARD… HE WASN’T COMING BACK. JACQUELINE CHAUMETTE, A CITY COUNCIL MEMBER IN SUGAR LAND SAID THIS: “EACH PERSON WANTED THE BEST FOR THE CITY. EACH PERSON FELT THAT THEIR IDEA AND THEIR MODE OF OPERATION WAS THE BEST WAY TO PROCEED. AND THINGS GOT HEATED.” THE CITY ISN’T RELEASING ANY OTHER DETAILS ABOUT SMITH’S DEPARTURE. ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF CLAY FENWICK HAS BEEN NAMED INTERIM FIRE CHIEF.
