THE OLD SOUTH BATON ROUGE IS MAKING A COME BACK!

NEW HOPE FOR AN AREA NEGLECTED FOR A LONG TIME!

For years the East Boulevard housing projects was synonymous with crime for the Insite when I was kid in Baton Rouge. It had a reputation of being Baton Rouge’s own Cabrini Green. It was a common place for drug deals and violence, some even ended up dead in the government subsidized housing. After years of neglect and bad publicity the complex was finally torn down. I passed the old site this weekend expecting to see an abandoned lot. I got quite the suprise. There were dozens of candy colored homes with neatly manicured lawns. The projects had been replaced with single and multifamily homes. Those who live there say it’s called River South now. I was told the city received a multimillion dollar grant from HUD to tear down the old projects and build the new homes. I stopped and got some photos of what used to be the deadly East Boulevard Projects – replaced with River South!
