City Controller Annise Parker made donations today of $1,000 each to the following five Houston non-profit organizations:
- Child Advocates
- Houston Area Women’s Center
- Houston Food Bank
- Houston SPCA
- Houston Zoo
The contributions were made from Parker‘s campaign funds, and the organizations were nominated by campaign supporters and selected in an online vote on Parker‘s website, www.anniseparker.com.
“These organizations are doing heroic work and need our help,” said Parker. “The unfolding economic crisis is resulting in an increased need for their services and a corresponding decline in donations.”
“I especially want to thank my supporters and all Houstonians who helped to select the recipients through their nominations and votes,” Parker continued.
Parker said the initial response to the request for suggested charities highlighted a number of smaller non-profits that do great work but may be little known in the larger community – and consequently might have received fewer votes. That’s why Parker will feature groups of nonprofit organizations in future editions of her Controller’s newsletter and ask her readers to support those organizations. The complete list – almost 150 charities – is available on Parker‘s website at www.anniseparker.com/charity_
In addition, Parker said she will ask each person or organization contributing to her campaign to make a corresponding contribution to a Houston nonprofit organization.
Parker has a long history of service to Houston nonprofit organizations. She currently serves as a director on the boards of the Holocaust Museum Houston and Girls Inc. and the advisory boards of the Houston Zoo, the MontroseCounselingCenter, Trees for Houston and Bering Omega Community Services.
