Many of you know KTRH radio talk show host Michael Berry and I are good friends. But I was floored by his talk show Thursday when it appeared he was playing dumb on the air or was it just politics? Berry was clearly disturbed at a report that indicated President Barack Obama’s entry into the White House was covered 35 times more than that of former President George W. Bush. I didn’t hear the whole show because I was at home sick today. But I did run out to get orange juice when I heard only a brief segment of the show on KTRH. But Berry, a lawyer by trade and talk show host by choice, is no dummy. In fact, the guy is one of the smartest people I know. But he knows exactly why Obama was so heavily covered by the press. Do I need to say it? Because he is this country’s first Black President in history. As long as this country has been around Barack H. Obama is the first Black to hold the position. And that is reason enough to cover the new leader of the free world. When Sidney Poitier won an Oscar he was heavily covered because he was the first Black to do so. When America put men on the moon, it was heavily covered by the media because it was a first. Extraordinary events and occurrences deserve heavy news coverage. I’m not sure if Michael believes the kool-aid he’s drinking or if he’s in a rare form of theatre. If it’s theatre – my friend Mr. Berry – you won’t be taking home the Oscar!
By the way, make sure you tune into his show because it’s very entertaining.
