The J. D. Tucker Foundation and The Guess Firm sponsor the 5h Annual Historically Black Colleges & Universities Film Festival and Seminars (HBCU Film Fest), February 28, 2009. The primary focus of the event is to educate attendants about the broad ranging careers within the entertainment sector, allow networking, and to foster dialogue between industry professionals and students. The event will be held at Texas Southern University in the MLK Building Auditorium.
Panels during the one day event will cover a wide range of topics affecting the various realms of the entertainment sector, and each will feature seasoned industry professionals ready to share experiences and answer questions from the audience. Notable panels this year include “The Actor’s Study,” hosted by cast members from HBO’s The Wire, “The Director’s Chair,” hosted by director Jesse Terrero, “The Film Entrepreneurs,” hosted by producers Daniel Garcia and Ron Finburg, and “Using New Media to Your Advantage,” hosted by owners of AllHipHop.com.
Students can also enter their original film projects into the annual film competition to be judged by John and his panel, with the winner to be announced at the conclusion of the event. Interested participants can obtain the contest rules and registration form from www.mysace.com/hbcufilmfest, as well as info about simply attending the event forums.
John “Dr. Teeth” Tucker, founder of J.D. Tucker Foundation, initially created the festival as a vehicle to equip Film and Communication students at Historically Black Colleges & Universities with resources that are not always obtainable to them and their schools. “The primary goal of the festival is to expose students to every possible opportunity that the film and television industries have to offer.
The event affords each participant access to a body of knowledge rarely available,” Tucker explains. “As a graduate of Texas Southern University it is important to me to share knowledge and experiences that will help prepare them for the reality of the business, and if I am able to help just one person then I have succeeded,” he goes on to state. It is this acknowledgement and acceptance of his social responsibility that has the famed director pooling all of his resources to make this year’s event the best one ever.
