Four people from Georgia are dead, including a two-year-old girl, and another remains in critical condition at a hospital after a fiery crash on I-10 early Friday morning. The charges against a Baton Rouge man were upgraded as the victims succumbed to their injuries.
According to Louisiana State Police, Maria Barrios, 54, died around 11:30 Friday night. Jacqueline Gomez, 35, and Sonia Gomez-Brionca, 27, died earlier that evening at Baton Rouge General Hospital after suffering burns in the accident. Two-year-old Alondra Brionca was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup, Rito Gomez, 22, remains in critical condition.
Troopers said Dwayne Leggett, 32, now faces four counts of negligent homicide, one count of negligent injuring and careless operation for the deadly crash. Troopers said they believe Leggett had been drinking and was fiddling with a cell phone when the crash occurred. He was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital with moderate injuries.
State police said just before 2 a.m., a truck with four adults and a toddler was stopped for construction on I-10 West near Siegen Lane when it was rear-ended by the truck driven by Leggett. The truck with five people inside burst into flames.
