Houston Mayoral candidate Annise Parker is firing back. Her target is Councilman Peter Brown. Brown, who’s also running for mayor, alleged in some his campaign literature that Parker in her role as City Controller dropped the ball. He says Parker missed deadlines for filing the city’s financial reports and Brown pointed to an audit that showed under Parker’s watch the city’s financial security was at risk. Parker says what Brown is trying to do is mislead the public. In a mid morning press conference Parker said, “this is a falsehood that smears my reputation but it directly attacks the Controller’s office and you’re not going to go after my people and I’m not going to respond.” Houston’s current Mayor Bill White defends Parker against Brown’s allegations. In an October 28, 2009 memo released by Parker, White says the Controller is not responsible for these delays and the reason for the delays were openly discussed at City Council. The Mayor went on to write the City has not been put at financial risk. Parker also said desperate candidates (Brown) do desperate things. We placed a call to Peter Brown’s office for a response this morning. Campaign manager and spokesperson Lucinda Guinn says Brown wasn’t available for a comment at the moment. However, she did say they stand behind their claims he may be available to defend his position later today.
