On Monday Mayor Annise Parker went before the Greater Houston Partnership and announced to the group she had found her candidate to run the Houston Police Department. She also reportedly said it would be announced by the end of the week. Reporters went wild and started digging.
The local newspaper on Tuesday reported Parker had chosen Acting Police Chief Charles McClelland to head the department. Not wanting to be left in the dust I did what most journalists do – I called the Mayor’s Communications Director who contradicted the Mayor saying a firm choice had not been made.
Janice Evans tells the Insite there is a short list (which means more than one candidate) and Mayor Parker would make the announcement at the end of the month and not the end of the week.
On Tuesday Parker then proclaimed during the Tuesday Council session there were a lot of rumors flying. But she never once denied her choice for HPD Police Chief was McClelland. Parker also did not come out and say those rumors were absolutely false.
So, am I the only one seeing contradicting information from the Mayor’s office.
If it is McClelland as so many of my sources say then this is the worst kept secret in the city and disturbing because the Mayor’s office has intentionally mislead the press.
