CONTINENTAL IS MOVING TO CHICAGO TO MERGE WITH UNITED!

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT HOUSTON?

Houston is losing a major employer. That company is Continental Airlines. This comes as the Houston based company moves forward with a merger with United Airlines. The company will be based in Chicago and renamed United. Just how will this impact Houston? Experts say this will likely result in a loss of jobs in both cities. Mayor Annise Parker issued this statement on Sunday:

Mayor Annise Parker Releases Optimistic Statement About Airline Merger

“Although we await more specifics, the early reports, if accurate, are very encouraging, indicating the Houston Airport System will remain an operational hub. This makes sense from a business standpoint, given our increasing international presence and our position as the gateway to Latin America and all points south of the border. We also believe, and the early reports appear to concur, that Houston will continue to play a major role in the corporate operations of the merged airline. We are proud of our hometown airline, the way it conducts business and it’s involvement in the community. We will actively work to continue this partnership and aid in the long-term success of the stronger airline expected from this merger.”

Mayor Parker and representatives from the Greater Houston Partnership, the county and other elected officials will hold a news conference tomorrow. Time and location will be announced in the morning.
