REVERSING THE OBESITY TREND IN HOUSTON!

ALVARADO TELLS YOU HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED!

State Representative Carol Alvarado has partnered with the Texas Health Institute (THI) to initiate a grassroots movement designed to elicit action from both individuals and the community as a whole that will begin to reverse the obesity trend in Houston, Texas, and America and improve our nation’s health.

On Saturday, June 12th at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center, Alvarado and THI will host the “Houston Obesity Awareness Summit 2010”, a FREE day-long event that will provide the general public with information on the health risks of obesity and lessons on how to make better decisions at home, in grocery stores, and at local restaurants. Experts will address:

· Nutrition; Eating Healthy on a Budget; Reading Labels and Preparing Meals

· The Built Environment; Fitness and Physical Activity

· Wellness in the Work Place

· Childhood Obesity

This is a family-friendly event, children will have their own activities and healthy lunches will be provided FREE to all who attend. Along with members of professional sports teams, Texas’ own Reality-TV Star Tracey Yukich from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” will also be on hand to discuss her personal story and the phenomenal transformation she made with her own life.

Dozens of organizations have already signed onto the Planning Committee for the Summit, including but not limited to the Partnership for a Healthy Texas, Texas Restaurant Association, American Heart Association, University of Texas School of Public Health, Texas Medical Association, Greater Houston Partnership, and H-E-B Grocery Stores, Inc.

“I want to thank all the organizations that are committed to this cause,” said State Representative Carol Alvarado. “I believe that by proving the facts about nutrition in a direct, face to face manner, Houstonians will make the conscious decision to change the way they live, work, eat and play; ultimately changing the diet of America, reversing the growing trend of our waistlines and the shrinking of our pocketbooks on the health care costs associated with obesity.”
