The official Insite school of the week is Attucks Middle in southeast Houston. I had a chance to visit the school just this week. I was completely impressed with the progress the small campus has made under the Apollo turnaround program in the Houston Independent School District. Under the leadership of Principal DJ Sharkey the school has seen an increase in
school attendance, a drop in disciplinary programs and high scores in academics. The middle school students are also tough cookies. They managed to come in 3rd place in a major science fair and the kids from Attucks competed against high school students. They also have have bragging rights three division championships in sports ranging from soccer to basketball. Principal Sharkey says her next major goal is to get a working library in the school to fill those eager minds with more knowledge from the shelves. Congratulations Dr. Sharkey and all of your hard working staff at Attucks Middle School!
