Chief Herbert Gilbert / South Houston

South Houston Police Chief Herbert Gilbert has been waging a very public campaign to possibly keep his job.

The veteran police officer sent emails to members of the local news media making them aware of his impending doom at the hands of city leaders.

Gilbert says the Mayor of South Houston Joe Soto has asked him to resign.

Mayor Joe Soto / South Houston

In the email Chief Gilbert says he will not step down and he wants to force Mayor Soto to fire him publicly at a city council meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

Gilbert seems to believe his expected termination may be the result of not enough traffic tickets being issued by his officers in the city.

The Insite has not been able to reach Mayor Soto as of 1 pm Monday.  I will keep trying!

I’m not sure I understand why he is asking the police chief to stand down. If you live in South Houston you know we have major road problems – I think the Mayor is the one who needs to step down.

well the police chief should stay. i contacted the mayor today about a neighbor who is a srug dealer so lets hope the mayor finally does something. all the neighbors and myself contacted the police department about the concern but nothing has been done. This has been going on for six months.Today we finally had enough so we called South Houston Police deparment but they said our concerns would be given to a detective. Lets hope the mayor takes action before someone in our neighbor is hurt. we want the drugs off our street.
