On Monday, July 23rd at 10:00am, three men will be sentenced for federal hate crimes related to the racially motivated assault of an African America man which took place on August 13th, 2011 in Houston, Texas. The sentencing is scheduled before Judge Kenneth Hoyt in the United States District Court, Southern District of Texas. Charles Cannon, Michael McLaughlin and Brian Kerstetter were found guilty of violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009. It was the first prosecution under this act in the Southern District of Texas.
