THE HOUSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT IS RESPONDING 24 HOURS AFTER FOX 26 FIRST BROKE A STORY ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT BEING THE TARGET OF A FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

FRIDAY WE REPORTED A FEDERAL PROSECUTOR WAS IN TOWN THIS WEEK QUESTIONING SEVERAL HOUSTON FIRE FIGHTERS.

THAT ATTORNEY FROM THE JUST DEPARTMENT WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT RACE ISSUES AND HOW WOMEN ARE TREATED AT HFD.

TODAY THE FIRE CHIEF AT THE DEPARTMENT IS ATTEMPTING TO DOWNPLAY THE PROBE WHILE DISTANCING HIMSELF AS WELL.

“The U.S. Department of Justice routinely investigates employment issues in fire departments around the country…The issues identified pre-date my arrival at HFD and are among the reasons I was brought to the department and charged with achieving change. We are cooperating fully and will do whatever is necessary to address any remaining problems.”

MAYOR ANNISE PARKER’S COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR JANICE EVANS HAS YET TO RESPOND TO A FOX 26 CALL FOR A COMMENT ON THIS FEDERAL PROBE.

FULL STATEMENT:

Statement from Chief Garrison: “The U.S. Department of Justice routinely investigates employment issues in fire departments around the country. Other cities that have gone through similar investigations include Chicago and New York City. The issues identified pre-date my arrival at HFD and are among the reasons I was brought to the department and charged with achieving change.
