Arcola Police Chief Howard Sylve walked into a special meeting of the City Council Monday night expecting the worse.
Sylve believes the Mayor has it in for him…and that could be true according to sources.
That council meeting was called in part to fire Chief Sylve.
But his saving grace was the lack of a quorum.
The five member council in Arcola didn’t have the votes to move forward with the termination.
One council member was absent for an illness and a second walked out before the body could vote.
Sylve tells the Factor Mayor Evelyn Jones wasn’t to replace him simply because she doesn’t like him.
He says the city leader wants to replace him as chief with two other possible candidates…one being the former Chief of Police in Arcola.
This comes at a time when the small city is already facing a lawsuit from a former officer who said he was just fired recently without cause.
Mayor Jones issued this statement to the Factor earlier this week: Right now, there is just a formal list of complaints. The whole City Council has the responsibility to hear the complaints and decide if they are true. The whole City Council also has the authority to decide if they are true. The whole City Council also has the authority to decide what action should be taken. The Council has not made either decision.
Regarding Former Chief Bartley: I worked in the Police Department with Chief Bartley for five years, so I know him and his work professionally.
