Press Release: After reviewing the required reading list for AP English, the district is removing the books Fight Club and A Thousand Acres. The district is also reviewing the process for how literature texts are selected for student reading assignments.

“Concerns about the book Fight Club was brought to the attention of the principal who immediately responded by meeting with his department. Later, a parent and the principal shared their concerns with me,” says Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey. “This matter was appropriately being handled by the principal and his department prior to the Board meeting.”

Frailey further explains that “Katy ISD is not an entity that is separate and apart from the community, rather it is an integral part of it, which is why the community’s values are our values. When we are made aware of places where those values do not align, we are open and willing to work with the community in a positive manner to find solutions that are in the best interest of students.”
