Harris County District Clerk Chris Daniel has been on a mission.
The elected official wants to drive up jury participation in Harris County.
In a community where there are two million registered voters, you’d think that wouldn’t be a problem…but it is.
However, Daniel isn’t detered by the statistics that could potentially leave some courts struggling to find a jury of peers in a case.
Through his efforts and public awareness he says he’s been able to increase jury participation and responses to jury notices in Harris County.
Daniel says this year he has seen an increase from 20% to 30% jury participation plus a rise in those responding to jury notices to 61%.
He says says previously the number of individuals who acknowledged jury summons was in the 50% range.
The clerk says the increase came after the construction of the new Harris County Jury Plaza where potential jurors don’t have to stand in the elements.
He also credits the rise in participation to a public service announcement which aired on local channels including Fox 26!
