Houston City Council’s Public Safety Committee is moving forward with a plan to address wage theft.
Houston City Councilman Ed Gonzalez says something must be done to help the most vulnerable in our community.
He says wage theft is a major problem for minorities mainly in the construction industry.
Gonzalez says there are already some forms of relief in place using the Texas Workforce Commission but he’d like to the city do its part.
One of the suggestions is banning city vendors or contractors who steal or shortchange their employees.
Gonzalez says there could be a formal vote on a possible ordiordinance in the near future.
