A YEAR OF KEEPING IMPAIRED OFFICERS OFF THE STREETS OF HOUSTON!

It was a year ago when the Houston Police Officers’ Union teamed up with Yellow Cab to keep police officers from driving drunk.

That program is called the HPOU Courtesy Ride program.

HPD officers are issued cards and if they have one too many they can call Yellow cab and a free ride will be dispatched.

Joe Gamaldi with HPOU says the program has been very successful and over 350 officers are card carrying members.

Gamaldi also says this is not only an effort to keep officers safe but the public as well.

The program will be a year old in January.

How it works:

Officers will be able to come to the Union office to get their free card.

They must sign a rules sheet that affects usage of the card.

They will be able to use the activated card when they call a

HoustonYellow Cab after a night out where they feel they may have had too much to drink.

The ride will be free and the cab driver will ask no questions, especially any that would identify the “anonymous” fare.
