Comedian and TV Personality Steve Harvey emphasized to the Disney Dreamers just how special they really are.
”We got 10,000 applications,” Harvey told the students at the Disney Dreamers Academy opening ceremony at Magic Kingdom on March 6. “You are the 100 that got picked. I mean really trip on that for a minute. How are you the 100? Don’t you understand? God has a plan for your life.”
Harvey was among many speakers sharing their life stories and giving tips on success at the Seventh Annual Disney Dreamers Academy . The academy selects 100 high school students from across the country and treats them to an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World along with a parent or guardian. The goal is to encourage the students to follow their dreams. The event is sponsored by Harvey and Disney World.
Speakers include Yolanda Adams, Magic Johnson, Essence Communications President Michelle Ebanks, and Jonathan Sprinkles, among others.
“I’m the only person outside of Starbucks to own a Starbucks and I grew up in the hood just like you,’ Magic Johnson told the students. “I don’t want any excuses from any of you. Failure is not an option. I didn’t make any excuses. You have to keep moving forward and being successful.”
“Your career is what you’re paid for,” Yolanda Adams says. “Your calling is what you’re made for.”
students also participate in career workshops and there are sessions for parents too. The event ends with a graduation ceremony.
