The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are investigating an officer involved shooting:

Last night, 05/15/2014 at approximately 930PM, an off duty 20 year veteran of the Galveston Police Department; was on his way home in his personal vehicle, when  he witnessed a dark colored truck travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of IH45 on the causeway. The Officer was travelling on the northbound side of IH45. He called 911 and reported the wrongway vehicle and the need for immediate intervention.

The officer fearing for the motoring publics safety, the approach of oncoming traffic and the Texas City Y interchange felt he needed to take immediate action, by firing rounds from his weapon at the rear tire of the wrongway vehicle, to get it  stopped.  The Officer did strike the wrongway vehicles right rear tire. The driver stopped the  vehicle northbound just south of the Texas City Y interchange.

The driver of the suspect vehicle and the officer both exited their vehicles when the driver of the suspect vehicle charged across the median at the veteran officer, the officer identified himself as a police officer. The suspect continued toward the officer who fired his weapon striking the suspect once. The suspect  was  combative with other arriving officers and had to be physically restrained prior to being transported to the UTMB hospital in Galveston  for  treatment. 

The suspect remained combative while receiving treatment for his injuries. He remains in UTMB in stable condition after  undergoing surgery for his injuries.
