The Helping a Hero organization will hold a Welcome Home Ceremony in The Woodlands at 11 a.m. on June 30, 2014, to honor Major (Ret.) Will Lyles of the United States Army. Major (Ret.) Lyles was severely injured in his third and final deployment to Afghanistan, where he lost both legs and suffered many other injuries.

“We are extremely grateful of the service and dedication of Major (Ret.) Lyles,” said The Woodlands Township Chairman of the Board Bruce C. Tough. “His dedication to our country allows us the freedom to be able to live in this world-renowned town of The Woodlands. All of us in The Woodlands owe Major (Ret.) Lyles a high sense of gratitude, and I am so pleased and honored that he and his wife will be moving to The Woodlands.”

Major (Ret.) Lyles spent approximately nine weeks in Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, and has been in and out of the center undergoing treatment and rehabilitation at The Center for the Intrepid. Major (Ret.) Lyles has been awarded three Bronze Stars, one Purple Heart and numerous other medals.

Now, Major (Ret.) Lyles and his fiancée Sophia are beginning a new life in The Woodlands, thanks to the support of Helping a Hero, a non-profit organization that provides specially adapted homes for severely wounded heroes injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Helping a Hero has assembled a team to construct a new wheelchair-accessible four bedroom, three bathroom home tailored to meet Major (Ret.) Lyles’ needs.

Helping a Hero received extremely generous help from other parties involved in making this happen, including Woodforest National Bank for underwriting the home, The Woodlands Development Company for donating the lot, and Chesmar Homes for constructing the home with special features of wide doors, a roll-in shower and a roll-under sink that will allow Major (Ret.) Lyles to remain independent.

Lee Greenwood will deliver a special performance for the event, and barbecue will be served following the Welcome Home Ceremony. Complete information on this event can be found in the Helping a Hero flier. Those interested in attending should RSVP to
