One of the highlights of the Texas Premier Soccer League calendar finds itself upon us this weekend with the US Club Soccer sanctioned Texas State Cup reaching its climax.
On Sunday at the Houston Dutch Lions Soccer Complex in Conroe, Galveston Pirate Soccer Club and Austin Real Cuauhtemoc will go into battle at 3.30pm, where only one will emerge as winner, lifting the illustrious golden cup into the air with a joyous roar of celebration!
Like a gladitorial battle to the death, blows will be struck that will decide the winner, only it will be the ball striking the back of the net and not a sword or spear.
Galveston Pirates will be looking to continue their good run of form in the cup and after defeating both Houston Hurricanes and Texas Timberz to reach this point, they will be buoyant of overcoming the odds and taking the trophy that awaits the winners.
Pirate owner Bill Alsobrook told us earlier today:
“The Pirates are ready to show the world that their record on paper, is just that, paper. We are going to show the TPSL and Texas exactly what this club is capable of. We have a chance to go from the whipping boys on the schedule of the league last season to a chance to lifting the cup this year. We will not be satisfied with anything less than victory!”
Bold words from the Pirate supremo but ones that have merit.
Last season under different leadership the team lacked cohesion and structure and finished the season with just one win from 11 outings, leaking 42 goals in the process. In comparison, this season has seen them take 5 wins from 12 matches, scoring 24 and conceding 26. That’s s huge progression in anyones books.
They will however be aware of the dangers lurking around the corner when they take on ARC. A team well known to them and if the most recent match is anything to go by, very dangerous and ruthless in attack.
The two met just two weeks ago in league play, where ARC ran out 4-0 victors,
ARC have also been in fine form of late, with victories over Twin Cities and the Pirates in the two weeks since the winter break return and have pushed themselves into second spot in the league.
ARC have a 60% win record this season in all competitions, scoring the highest amongst all TPSL teams on 27, conceding only 19 in the process.
The Austin side are continual high scorers, whether it be in victory or defeat and have managed to score four goals in a game four times this season, and score three goals in a game also four times. Ironically, both times they have faced the Pirates this season, they have scored four goals in each.
This match is sure to be a people pleaser and after last seasons 3-3 draw after 120 minutes of play between the holders Houston Dutch Lions and Houston Hurricanes, they have a hard act to follow. On past form between the two, they will make sure they live up to the expectation placed upon them.
ARC spokesman Gerardo Romero was also positive about his teams prospects saying:
“We are in good form coming into this game and will be looking to scalp the Pirates for the third time this season.
After climbing into second in the league and reaching this final, we remain the only team capable of winning the league and cup double, and Sunday brings the realisation of what could possibly be the first part of that. We intend to sink the Pirate ship and blast them out the water with our formidable play!”
Impressive use of puns in that statement from ARC representative Gerardo but confident words indeed, confidence breeds positivity though and the Capital city side will be gunning for glory over the term of play.
TPSL President was also full of praise for both sides when he said:
“The Texas Cup Final will be a great match this Sunday and will showcase our Cup competition with two teams that play completely different games. You have Austin with slick passing, good technique and very fast against a Galveston side who are very physical, big, strong and are a treat in the air. Pirates also have flair players who can turn a game when required. I have spoken to a few of the Pirate players and they are up for this game, they feel they didn’t perform in Austin last time out. Austin also know it’ will be a very different game in this cup final match where winner takes all.”
Austin may be entering this game as favourites but anything is possible in cup soccer, that’s the magic of the cup!
