Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church Troop 242 is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Boy Scout troop was the first youth organization established by Audrey and Reverend Bill Lawson in the early days of the church. Since its creation in 1965, over one thousand boys and young men have gone through the church’s Scouting program. Troop 242 is proud to report that more than 173 of their own have attained the rank of Eagle Scout; one of the largest number of Eagles to come out of an African American troop in the country. Troop 242 Scouts are trailblazers in business, education, medicine, politics and other professions. There are many stories of boys who have been provided support, training and positive role models.
Scouts of all ages speak highly of the impact Troop 242 has had on their lives. They know that Scouting has made them more responsible individuals, teaching them leadership skills and building self-confidence. Parents appreciate all that has been given to their sons in teaching them life skills, and providing a network of positive friends. This camaraderie grew out of participation in so many projects like camping, Scout Fair, selling popcorn and the first aid competition.
The impact of the Scouting program can also be seen in the community through various service projects. We hope to continue this great work for the next fifty years and beyond. Through benevolent partnerships with individuals and companies, support for Scouting is a good investment in the future of our city. We hope that you will join us in celebrating this milestone, and support Troop 242 as we purchase a new camping trailer and other scouting equipment.
