FROM THE DESK OF PASTOR ALAN LAMAR PATTERSON:
I attended Hampton University with Harry Smith. Harry is Will Smith’s younger brother. I was inspired by Will and Jada Smith’s strong support of Charity Water a non-profit organization that helps supplies clean water to developing companies. I inquired the legitimacy of the organization and confirmed that they are changing the world through water. Clean water means health, income and education–especially for women and kids.
As a congregation I felt compelled to get involved because my vision for Mount Corinth is to be equally concerned with issues beyond Corinth, our community, city and country. Our Vision is to THINK BIGGER! Our mission is to CHANGE THE COSMOS by channeling our commitment to Christ through contributions to citizens in need around the world.
I preached a sermon straight out of Genesis 26 last Sunday entitled, “DON’T STOP DIGGING! It was about Isaac digging wells in the same place where his legendary father Abraham had dug successfully. However, Abraham’s opposition tried to obstruct the wells Abraham had dug. They also tried to block Isaac from digging BUT GOD made a way out of no way. Isaac dug even in the midst of a fierce famine and Isaac struck WATER. It was an act of Divine design to showcase God’s favor.
Last Sunday at our 8:00 A.M. service I shared our plan to raise $10K to drill a well in Africa. Before our 10:00 A.M. began our 8:00 A.M. members had not only raised the $10,000.00; we had a surplus of several thousand from members who wanted to join in the grace gift.
At the 10:00 A.M. service I explained that we were going to drill a well in Africa and I was prepared to share our goal however, the members at our 8:00 A.M. service already covered the cost. I then proceeded to ask by a raising of the hand since they did not have an opportunity to give would the 10:00 A.M. service be interested in getting an additional well and approximately 95% of the congregation held their hands high. Therefore, after our 10:00 A.M. worship service we held another drive to drill another well. Shortly, after the 10:00 A.M. service was completed not only did the members of Corinth cover 1 well but we secured an additional $10K for a second well and had a overflowing surplus of several thousand from those who wanted to join in. Since Sunday we have had many more members contacting us wanting to be apart of the grace gift to bring clean water to others.
Corinth will now be digging two water wells in Africa and Asia. One well in Malawi, Africa will be called REHOBOTH (means well of success) and another in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Asia will be called SHIBAH (means well of surplus).
My father the late great legendary A. Louis Patterson Jr. used to say it is better to be “a channel of blessings rather than a reservoir of selfishness.”
At Mount Corinth we give cheerfully and joyfully because of the undeserved, unearned and unmerited gift of grace the Lord gives us. We’re getting ready to change the cosmos and God’s got our back and our blessings!
