Starting at 9 a.m. Thursday members of the Houston Police Department and other surrounding law enforcement agencies will send off three runners representing the Travis Manion Foundation who intend to finish a 2015 walk across the nation that ended in Houston after a runner who initially began it died in Houston…The run will also honor veterans.
The three representatives from the Travis Manion Foundation will set out from Houston to run 1500 miles to finish the journey of a supporter, Sam Leonard, who passed away last year after being diagnosed with stomach cancer during his walk.
Leonard had begun his walk across America in the fall of 2014 in his home state of Florida with the goal of walking all the way to California. In April of 2015, Leonard was forced to stop his efforts in Houston due to his health. He then passed away in August, 2015, at the age of 73. Prior to Leonard’s death, he and his family worked with the Travis Manion Foundation with a goal to finish Leonard’s walk across America.
